First on todays post. The update on the VegTrug plantings that I promised in my last
post! I will continue to post updates as we go.

Now, see what I am so excited about? More later. Now onto todays post!
As I have mentioned I work at The Home Depot. Every
spring before the patio furniture and new mowers and
all things spring come out, there is a storage event.
This is so folks who bought new decorations for the
holidays and folks getting ready to do spring cleaning have something to store away items
they don't want out all year in.
At the end of this event the totes went on clearance. I bought 13 totes for $2.90 each
plus tax.

After taking one bin as a test subject, I tried several
ways to cut drainage holes into the bin to see what
worked best.
I wound up borrowing my brothers drill and drilling six
holes into each tote.
If you decide to try this let me warn you now. Trying to punch holes with a screw
driver and hammer is not only hard to do but also causes severe cracking in the plastic
around the puncture site and the hole is to small to properly drain the water from a
container this size.
Using a utility knife is better than a screw driver but you need a real steady hand and
very precise cuts or you end up with weak areas that will be over cut and will crack in
the future. Like, when you go to put several bags of soil in it!
So, I found the best hole with the least chance of cracking was made by the drill. It also
made the work go much quicker.

Right now I only have two bins planted. I have grapes in
one and this one has a blackberry. Both plants have a
little frost damage from the late frost we had last
week. I am fairly sure the grapes are gonna bite the
dust and have to be replaced. I am hopeful about this
blackberry though. I pinched off the most damaged leaf sections and it seems to be
doing okay. I did order a replacement blackberry and raspberry (I killed the first, didn't
realize my room was warm enough to start them growing. The grapes and blackberry
were very pale and dropping a little but the raspberry was too far gone before I realized
what was happening.) I figure if the blackberry does make it, then, I'll have plenty for
making jelly and jam, juice and fresh eating recipes and snacks. As well as sharing at work
and with the neighbors.

Here is an image of the grapes before the frost and yes
I did protect them as best as I could but it was a really
bad temp drop.
Like I said I will probably have to replace these.
Anyway, in the other totes I will be planting a few
different types of tomatoes once they are big enough and cucumber and potatoes and an
assortment of squash, peas, peppers, beans, eggplant, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and more
strawberries.
I will be going to get tomato cages and some other odds and ends on Friday, already know
I need to get more soil and composted manure and should get at least another container
or two. I am thinking of getting a few containers called City Pickers. I will post what I
get as well as do updates on everything as the season goes on.
I promise to do a craft post soon as well. I have a few ideas in mind. See ya later!
